Let’s Talk Toilet Paper–Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper

Date

By Fredrica Syren:
Whenever you jump on the zero-waste train, you will eventually be faced with the question about toilet paper. In 2006 when Colin Beaver, also known as No Impact Man, and his family embarked on a project of one year with no impact, he decided to stop using toilet paper altogether. This resulted in lots of misunderstanding and criticism. Since we started living more eco-friendly and zero waste, my husband and I have been frustrated over finding eco-friendly and green toilet paper. We have tried many kinds but always have been disappointed when paper comes individually wrapped and packaged in plastic.
First, did you know that it requires 37 gallons of water just to make one roll of toilet paper? Now, if that alone is not a good reason for going that extra mile to find better options, then maybe consider the fact that lots of trees from virgin forests are used to make toilet paper which, by the way, is very unsustainable.
Can you buy 100% recycled, plastic free, chemical free, eco-friendly and non-bleached toilet paper — or do we have to pull a No Impact Man?
The good news is that we have come long way since No Impact Man’s project. Today, you can find toilet paper made of 100% recycled paper that is wrapped in paper instead of plastic, so all you should do is recycle the inner tube and wrapping paper. I do not buy my toilet paper from the store; rather, I order it from either Amazon or (my personal favorite) the company “Who Gives a Crap.” Charming name, I know, but this company is great and you can buy in bulk of 48 rolls, which for a family of 5 is great.
Here are some great companies selling eco-friendly. Some even offer plastic free toilet papers.
