Oh, my poor lips have been so dry and cracked because of the cold weather here and my kids also have dry lips. My daughter Bella and I were inspired to make our own lip balm to save a little money, so we know what’s in the balm, and to reduce waste. It was easier than I first thought and I’m super happy with the outcome. If you want to add a bit of color to the lip balm to make your lips both soft and colorful you can add a little beet powder.

3 Tablespoons Cocoa Butter, grated
1 Tablespoon High Quality Olive Oil
A few drops of essential oils like lemon, mint, lavender and tangerine (my favorites).
1/2-1 Tsp beet powder (optional)
Over a double broiler, melt the cocoa butter until it’s liquid. Stir in the olive oil and a few drops of essential oils. Pour into tins or jar, and let cool on the counter overnight.

I love using kale to make pesto. Kale tastes great with lemon, salt, garlic and oil; and it adds nutritional value. My pesto also includes pumpkin seeds since our son Liam’s homegrown pumpkins have naked seeds. Pumpkin seeds provide nutrition like magnesium, protein and iron, as well as omega-3, omega-6 and fiber. Here is how to make vegan kale pesto.

Ingredients:

½ cup raw pumpkin seeds
2 cups kale, torn into smaller pieces
1 garlic clove
Juice from ½ lemon
¼ -1/2 tsp salt (or more if needed)
2 Tbsp nutritional yeast
½ cup olive oil
Directions:

Roast seeds in 350° F preheated oven until slightly golden. It takes about 5 minutes.

Using a food processor, pulse kale and garlic until finely chopped. Add pumpkin seeds, salt, nutritional yeast and lemon juice, then blend until smooth. With food processor still running, add the oil. Done!!

Enrich your soil
Naturally, you can just let the leaves decompose on the ground or add them to your vegetable beds. Leaves will enrich the soil your trees and providing a habitat for a range of wildlife.

Enhance your garden
My favorite way to use fall leaves is to add them to my raised garden beds. I always smile when I hear how much money people spend on mulch when it’s usually free somewhere in your neighborhood. We use grass clippings, weeds and leaves, and old plants as mulch.

Building up the layers in a no-dig raised bed is a great way to create rich soil, so you’ll have a thriving soil ecosystem in the spring.

Build a compost pile
Fall is an excellent time to build a compost pile, which can be as simple as staking up a hoop of three-foot-high chicken wire. Then, just add leaves to your composting systems along with other biodegradable materials.

Pro tip: After Halloween and Thanksgiving, look for leftover bales of straw on sale–or even left out for garbage collection. Straw makes for excellent mulch and can be added to the compost pile along with your leaves.

Use leaves as mulch
Fall leaves make excellent mulch, and as a bonus, they’re free!

Leaf mulch tends to break down and blend into the soil quickly–adding lots of nutrients–and it blocks weeds from forming. Using leaves as mulch also entices earthworms to your garden soil.

Create fall-themed decorations
I use fall leaves for zero-waste decorations, both indoors and outdoors.

Along with mini pumpkins, fall leaves make beautiful decorations for holiday parties, dinners, or an attractive fall-themed front door decoration.

Pile & play
Fun for kids (big and small); simply rake your leaves into piles and jump right in!

To pack a zero waste lunch for the kids; Invest in a reusable bento box or thermal soup containers as well as a reusable metal bottle, reusable cutlery, and cloth napkins. If you have to wrap food, use either a cloth sandwich bag or beeswax wrap to ensure avoiding unwanted waste. Buy snacks from the bulk section or make your own crackers, cookies and energy bars.
