🌱 Who says gardening season is over?

Fall has arrived here in Sweden, but that doesn’t mean I stop growing food. While I still have a few things growing outdoors, my kitchen window is officially becoming my little indoor garden again.

Right now I’m growing lettuce, fresh herbs and sprouts, all right in my window, helping provide fresh greens for my kids even as the days get colder. 💚

It’s proof that you really don’t need a big garden to grow food.

All you need is:
🌱 A sunny window
🪴 A shelf and a few pots
🌱 Some soil
🌱 Seeds
💧 Water

That’s it!

A balcony, patio, windowsill or tiny corner of your kitchen can become a place to grow food. Start small, grow what you can, and enjoy the magic of feeding your family something you grew yourself. 🌿

🍎 DON’T THROW AWAY THOSE FALLEN APPLES!

Every fall, I collect fallen apples that might otherwise become food waste and turn them into homemade apple vinegar. I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought apple vinegar—I always make my own!

You can also use apple cores and peels. I keep scraps in the freezer until I have enough for a batch. Zero waste at its best: food scraps → vinegar → leftover scraps → compost. ♻️

HOW TO MAKE APPLE SCRAP VINEGAR

🍎 Fill a clean glass jar about ¾ full with chopped apples, cores and peels.

💧 Dissolve 2 Tbsp cane sugar in 2 cups filtered water and pour over the apples. Make more if needed—the apples should be completely covered.

⚖️ Add a fermentation weight to keep ALL the apples submerged. This is important to prevent mold.

🫙 Cover with cheesecloth or a coffee filter secured with a rubber band. It needs to breathe, so don’t use an airtight lid.

🌑 Keep in a dark place at room temperature for about 3 weeks, checking regularly that everything stays submerged.

🍏 Strain out the apples (compost them!) and return the liquid to the jar.

⏳ Cover again and ferment for another 3–4 weeks, stirring every few days.

You may see a jelly-like “mother” forming on top—that’s a good thing! When your vinegar tastes tart enough, put on a proper lid and start using it.

A few tips: clean hands and equipment are essential when fermenting. White film can occur during fermentation, but fuzzy or colored mold means the batch should be discarded.

And one reason I love making my own? Many supermarket vinegars are pasteurized and filtered, while homemade raw vinegar can retain its naturally occurring “mother.”

Fallen apples aren’t waste—they’re a free ingredient. 🍎💚

🍅 Green tomatoes refusing to ripen? Try this!

Don’t give up on those stubborn green tomatoes! Pick them and place them in a sunny window indoors. ☀️ With a little warmth and time, they’ll ripen beautifully.

No tomato left behind! 🍅💚

🚆 Well… the beginning of our journey home was a little rough! 😅

One VERY delayed train meant we missed our connecting train, and for a while there, things definitely weren’t going according to plan.

But now all is well again. 🙌 We’re finally on our way, settling in with a snack, relaxing, and enjoying some pretty amazing views from the window. 🌲✨

And you know what? Despite the delays, missed connections, and occasional travel chaos, I absolutely LOVE traveling by train. ❤️🚆

There’s just something about slowing down, watching the world pass by, and making the journey part of the adventure.

Now… snacks out, feet up, and hopefully smooth travels the rest of the way home. 🤞🥰

Laundry is one of those areas where going zero waste can make a surprisingly big difference. And in my house, with three kids — including two boys who somehow manage to come home with stains I can’t even identify 😂 — I need products that actually work.

For laundry detergent, I use Kind Laundry detergent sheets. I love that they’re lightweight, easy to store, simple to use, and eliminate those big plastic detergent bottles. Just tear off a sheet, toss it in, and wash. 🌿

But my REAL lifesaver? Their stain remover. 🙌

Two boys means grass stains, food stains, mud, sports clothes…and the occasional mystery stain that nobody seems to know anything about. 🤔 Their stain remover has become a regular part of my laundry routine and helps me keep clothes looking good longer.

And that’s an important part of zero waste too: taking care of what we already own so we don’t have to replace it.

My zero waste laundry philosophy is pretty simple:
Wash only when needed, use plastic-free products when possible, treat stains instead of giving up on clothes, air-dry whenever I can, and make everything last as long as possible. ♻️💚

Because zero waste isn’t about having a perfect laundry routine. It’s about finding simple swaps that work for your real, messy, stain-filled family life. 😄

🌱 You don’t need a big garden to grow a lot of food.

I know because I grow so much of our food right on my patio. 🥕🍅🥬🌿 I use raised beds, pots and containers, and every season I’m amazed by how much this little area can produce.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about stepping outside our bedroom window, harvesting dinner, and knowing I’m feeding my kids fresh, homegrown organic produce. 💚 It honestly never gets old.

So please don’t let the size of your garden—or the fact that you only have a patio or balcony—stop you. Start with what you have. A few pots of herbs, lettuce, tomatoes or radishes can be the beginning of something amazing.

Growing food at home has become such an important part of our lifestyle, and I love showing others that you really can do it too.

🔥🍎 Fire Cider season is officially here!

The first cold of the season has made its way through my family—and wow, it was a bad one. 🤧 With three kids in the house, once something starts making the rounds, it can feel like it hits everyone.

That was my reminder that it’s time to make a fresh batch of one of my favorite fall and winter staples: homemade fire cider. 🔥

Fire cider is a traditional apple cider vinegar tonic infused with warming ingredients like ginger, garlic, horseradish, turmeric and chili. I love having a jar ready during cold season.

Here’s how I make mine:

🍎 Apple cider vinegar
🫚 Fresh ginger, sliced
🧄 Garlic cloves, crushed
🌱 Fresh turmeric, sliced
🔥 Fresh chili or cayenne
🌿 Horseradish, chopped or grated
🍋 Lemon and/or orange slices
🌿 Optional: rosemary, thyme or cinnamon

I fill a clean glass jar about halfway with all the chopped ingredients, then pour apple cider vinegar over everything until completely covered.

Put the lid on and let it infuse in a cool, dark place for about 3–4 weeks, giving the jar a little shake every day or so. Then strain and store the finished fire cider in a clean glass bottle or jar.

You can take a small shot, dilute it in water, add it to tea once it has cooled a little, or even use it in salad dressings. If you like it sweeter, add a little maple syrup after straining. 🍁

And now I wait…because after the cold that just went through this house, I definitely want this batch ready for the rest of fall and winter! 😂🔥

Just a reminder: fire cider is a traditional food tonic, not a proven way to prevent or cure colds—but I love it as part of our seasonal routine.

Have you ever made your own fire cider?
