Homemade Dryer Sheets
I was asked about our alternative to dryer sheets, so here we go. Dryer sheets are typically used in the dryer to reduce static, add a pleasant scent, and soften laundry. One problem with dryer sheets is their disposability—they’re extremely wasteful! An even bigger problem is that they’re loaded with harmful chemicals.
Here are some of the chemicals that can be found in store-bought dryer sheets:
- Benzyl acetate
- Benzyl alcohol
- Ethanol
- Limonene
- Chloroform
- Fragrances and dyes
- Glutaraldehyde
- Hexylene Glycol
- Hydrochloric Acid
These chemicals and toxins are known to cause cancer, breathing problems, and allergic reactions. The chemicals transfer to our clothes, bodies, and ultimately the environment.
A better option is to make your own dryer sheets which are reusable, waste-free, and most importantly, chemical-free.
What you need:
- Wipes made from old scraps of cloth or tea towels
- Essential oils of your choice (we like citrus, orange, and lavender)
- Distilled vinegar
- A spray bottle
- A large jar or basket for storing wipes in
How to make them:
1. Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 10-20 drops of essential oil of your choice in the spray bottle. The amount of drops depends on how strong of a scent you prefer. I suggest starting with less and adding more as you like. Screw top on
2. Fold the wipes and place in your jar or storage container.
3. Moisten wipes but don’t saturate them by spraying them with the vinegar mixture. Before spraying, shake bottle to make sure oils mix with the vinegar
4. Use one wipe/cloth per dryer load to freshen laundry.
5. After use, you just fold it back up and add it back to the jar or basket.
