Because we’re moving, we’re working emptying our freezer so I’m making lots of tomato sauce from last season’s homegrown tomatoes and peppers.

The secret to good kindergarten soup is that the kids have to harvest and cut the veggies💚

Gathering around a table to share a warm midmorning snack is an essential part of the preschool and kindergarten day at Waldorf schools, so my kids all grew up making this soup at school.

Soup is a class community project, where everyone contributes by bringing a vegetable from home and then together transforms it into something that nourishes everyone.

I have to say that the kitchen is the easiest place to reduce waste by replacing disposables with reusable. This is where I journey began with mason jars, refillable soap and reusable kitchen paper towels.

Taking care of our planet does not mean we have to sacrifice caring for ourselves. Self-care is an essential part of living a healthful life, but often self-care items are packaged with single-use plastic.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to make self-care part of your daily routine and live a zero waste lifestyle at the same time.

What are your favorite zero waste self-care products, store bought or homemade?

In my book, a practical guide to zero waste for families I have a whole chapter on zero waste personal care with tips for zero waste products and recipes for homemade ones.

Gardening day and I’m harvesting broad beans among other things. Broad beans are our favorite bean to grow because they are pretty hardy and adaptable – they grow in most soils and climates. They're a great source of protein.

What beans are you growing?

Chemical free oral care tips and DIY mouth wash recipe.

Most plastic toothbrushes will end up in the trash eventually. These plastic items represent more than 50 million pounds of waste that ends up in landfills every year. Since they are made from plastic and are not biodegradable, they will remain indefinitely in landfills or — worse — in our oceans, nature or beaches, where they will add to greenhouse gasses and cause more global warming.

My favorite plastic free and compostable toothbrush is @bite

* 1 cup filtered water
* 1 Tbsp baking soda
* 20 drops Thieves oil
Mix everything in a clean bottle or mason jar with a lid. Since the baking soda will settle, be sure to shake the jar before each use of the product. This mouth wash can be kept at room temperature.

The best brand tooth paste sold in stores are:

The Dirt – All Natural Tooth Powder(my favorite)
Primal Life: Dirty Mouth Organic Toothpowder
