The Problem With Palm Oil and Sneaky Names to Disguise it

Palm oil is the most popular vegetable oil globally due to its versatility. It can be found in everything from instant noodles to ice cream, soaps, shampoos, and fuel. It is so common that it can be found in around half of the packaged items in most supermarkets!

Palm oil is obtained from the fruit of the African oil palm tree, and due to inexpensive production and low labor costs, it has become a go-to oil. Today, 50 million tons of palm oil are produced annually, accounting for 30% of the world’s vegetable oil production.

The Problem With Palm Oil and Sneaky Names to Disguise it

What’s wrong with using palm oil?

Over the last four decades, the extensive demand for palm oil has led to widespread deforestation, a major contributor to climate change. Rainforests are currently being cleared at 300 football fields per hour to make way for oil palm plantations! Tropical forests play a crucial role in carbon reduction because trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen during photosynthesis. Protecting tropical forests from deforestation is essential as they reduce emissions and protect the planet against climate change’s worst and most expensive impacts.

Tropical forests are also home to many endangered species. Over 300,000 species of animals are found in forests where palm oil trees grow, many of which are injured, killed, and displaced during deforestation. One such animal is the orangutan.

Orangutans live in fertile lowland soils near rivers favored for establishing oil palm plantations. They cannot survive long-term in oil palm plantations, as they lose their primary food sources, and some ingest the poison used to combat rats. Scientists estimate that fewer than 60,000 orangutans remain in the wild on Borneo and Sumatra today. Although the Indonesian government has claimed it’s committed to protecting orangutans, critics wonder why they continue to allow palm oil plantations to expand into their natural habitat.

In addition, it’s hard to figure out which products contain palm oil because most countries don’t have laws requiring labeling “palm oil” in food. Palm oil is often hidden under the name “vegetable oil” among 170+ other names. Despite that, as consumers, we can do our part by refusing palm oil products or demanding that manufacturers and retailers use certified sustainable palm oil.
