As my family continues our journey toward a plastic-free life (or, as we like to call it, a “plastic diet”), we have replaced almost all plastics in the kitchen. Food storage had been one area I struggled with at the beginning — only because I really didn’t know what I could use instead. I know how bad plastic food containers and plastic wrap can be for our health. Many years ago, when I was diagnosed with a thyroid problem, my endocrinologist told me I should try to eliminate as much plastic from my life as possible because of its dark side. (Plastics may contain hormone-affecting chemicals.) It really made me realize how much plastic surrounds us and how much we depend on it, especially for food storage.
Plastic contains toxins (such as BPA, the most controversial) that leach into soil, water, wildlife and our bodies. These very harmful toxins cause damage to our hormones and nervous system, and create all kinds of problems and illnesses. Research shows that since WWII there has been a dramatic increase in breast cancer and that girls reach puberty earlier. These developments have been linked to BPA exposure. Furthermore, when plastic ends up in a landfill, it can take 1,000 years to break down because it’s not biodegradable. During this time, it will pollute both soil and water.
I think that, when it comes to replacing plastic cling wrap and foil, many draw a blank about what to use instead. Enter beeswax wrap!!! This product has completely changed my life because it’s the perfect replacement for plastic and foil for food storage. Beeswax wrap is a sheet made from 100% organic cotton fabric, natural beeswax, and jojoba oil, coconut oil and tree resin. It clings like plastic wrap, so you can wrap foods like cheese, half an avocado or lemon in it; and it even can cover a bowl. It’s great for wrapping food or snacks when out and about on an adventure.
Beeswax wrap is flexible and reusable, and very convenient since it comes in several sizes to fit all kinds of foods and bowls. The best part about beeswax wrap is that it is reusable: all you have to do is clean it in cold water. They last about a year. After that, just cut them into strips and put them into the compost since they are biodegradable. So — beeswax wrap saves money and the planet; and because it’s all natural and contains no chemicals, it’s also good for our health.
In My Green-Mom.com Shop, I sell beeswax wraps that are handmade by a growing team of women in a Bristol, Vermont. The fabric and printing are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard. The beeswax is sourced from sustainably managed hives in the U.S., and only organic jojoba oil is being used. Bee’s Wrap packaging is recyclable and plastic-free.
