If you follow me on Instagram, you know my family and I are traveling for the next few weeks. Staying healthy while traveling can be tricky because you’re exposed to more and new germs, but also while traveling you might not be getting as much sleep as you should. The good news is that it’s possible to stay healthy; it just takes a little planning and thinking. Over the years of traveling the world, I have created a little traveler routine that gives me the best chance to stay healthy even while on the road. Here are some of my tricks and tips.
Essential oils—I never travel without thieves oil, peppermint, lemon and Stress Away. I even bring thieves oil wipes to wipe down and kill germs in areas where my family or I will be spending some time. Thieves oil boosts the immune system and kills germs; peppermint oil is a great pick-me-up and helps with digestion, which can be caused from sitting for long times on a train or plane. That can make anyone a little bit less regular. Stress Away from Young Living is great for helping with relaxation and getting a good night’s sleep. I take a drop or two in a glass of water every night. I also love a few drops of lemon in my drinking water to alkaline my body and boost my immune system.
Barley grass juice powder—I bring this in capsules to help me stay regular and boost my immune system.
Healthy snacks—Food in airports, train stations or on the plane never is good and usually lacks vegetables; so I always bring a bag of homemade trail mix of mixed raw nuts, goji and mulberries. I also like to bring an avocado sliced in half, a spoon and lots of fresh fruits.
Yoga mat—There is always room in my suitcase for my yoga mat. Because my body always feels sore and stiff after flying, I like to do some yoga every day.
Coconut oil—Coconut oil is great for so many things; it has antibacterial properties so I like to take a spoonful to keep me healthy. As well, I oil pull for healthy teeth and gums; and I use it as a moisturizer and hair shine, for massage, and much more. So, a jar of coconut oil is part of my travel kit.
Chamomile and matcha tea—I love my tea, and chamomile is great for a good night’s sleep. Matcha tea has many benefits like boosting the immune system, lowering blood sugar, helping increase metabolism, and detoxifying the body. It’s a lifesaver and a great way to stay healthy any time, but especially when traveling.
Water bottle—I always bring my own reusable water bottle to avoid plastic, but also because I can fill it at one of the airport’s water bottle refill stations and have access to as much water as I need while traveling. Staying hydrated is the key to a healthy body.
Besides bringing all these items, I always make sure to stretch as much as possible, whether in the airport, in the train station, on a flight or on a train. Whenever possible, I will move my body and walk around and never sit while waiting to board.
Bon Voyage!
