Frequently asked questions

Are the Crafts/Supplies Free?
You bet they are! From our family to yours, we have donated all the supplies you’ll need to make your DIY crafts.
Will you be reading from your book?
For this particular event, we will not. However, on 5/6 in Glendora, join early for their monthly Story Time with local rescue pups!
Can we purchase your book at Barnes & Noble while we attend?
Absolutely, yes. The friendly Barnes & Noble staff can assist you in purchasing a copy of the book.
What started you going Zero Waste?
I grew up in the forest—the trees were my playground. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined the climate crisis we find ourselves in today—but it wasn’t until I became a mother that I felt a deep sense of urgency about it.

We’re a family of five living zero-waste, plant-based, & mindfully minimal so that both our kids and planet can enjoy a beautiful, thriving future.

Fueled by that maternal, protective instinct to leave my children with a healthy planet to call home long after I’m gone— we’ve slowly (and clumsily, at times) embraced a zero-waste lifestyle—and we’re still figuring it out as we go. We were living in Sweden back in 2015 when we made the commitment to go zero-waste (basically, if we couldn’t compost or recycle it—we wouldn’t buy it). It was challenging, required creativity, and I often found myself wishing for a roadmap or handbook to follow…which eventually inspired me to write one.

We now live on an urban homestead ten minutes off the freeway in the middle of San Diego. Together with my husband James and our kids Bella (13), Noah (8), and Liam (6), we care for our 400 square foot backyard garden, which plenishes many of our meals. We’ve slowly integrated changes like eating vegan, going plastic-free, and buying organic—but not without a whole compost pile of trial and error along the way. Living zero waste in a consumer culture isn’t easy—so we do our best to make it as transparent, straightforward, and light-hearted as possible. And while there are hard days, the unexpected benefits like more time, more money, and deeper connection have made it well-worth the lifestyle change.

We present the film along side our talented film team.  Matt Helbig & Sara Persson are the award winning filmmaking couple behind Fifty Square Feet Productions. They’re best know for telling stories about the environment and cause related companies. Matt & Sara met in late 2010 while Sara was reporting on behalf of the BBC in Afghanistan. She had just arrived at a combat outpost in Paktika Province and her beat was covering the intensifying cross-border skirmishes between the Taliban and the 101st Airborne Division.

Sara was embedded with Whiskey Company from the storied “Band of Brothers” 2nd of the 506th where she met Matt, an infantry platoon leader. Neither one was looking for love, but that’s exactly what happened. In 2014 they started Fifty as a way to tell stories that make people take notice. She has degrees in Journalism and International Relations from City University, London and Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Italy. In print, Sara is represented by Folio Literary Management.

Matt is an award-winning director who has worked with Twilio, DropBox, Sharp HealthCare, Shift.org and more. He creates high-concept and visually innovative projects where he is involved from start to finish. Formally trained in film and media at UCSD, he began his filmmaking career following his distinguished service with the United States Army as an Infantry Officer. Matt would work as an editor in the commercial space, before moving behind the camera where he has won a gold Telly in branded content, beating submissions from the likes of Google and AT&T. Beyond filmmaking Helbig has a passion for humanitarian and environmental issues. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from The American University in Washington, DC.
