DIY Rosehip Infused Face Oil

During fall, I forage plenty of rosehips, and I must admit, if they weren’t so healthy and valuable, I wouldn’t bother with them—the thorns make picking them quite tricky! Despite the challenges, our family uses rosehips for many things: we dry them for tea, make rosehip soup, and turn them into a powder for baking and smoothies. We also use them to make infused rosehip oil.

Rosehip-infused oil is good for the skin because it is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, including vitamins A and C. These nutrients can help to hydrate and nourish the skin, improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of scars and fine lines, and protect the skin from environmental damage. Rosehip oil is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help soothe and calm irritated skin. Using rosehip oil in skin care can contribute to a healthier, more radiant complexion.

To make rosehip oil for skincare, you will need dried rosehips and a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. Since the seeds contain many good and healing properties, I also like to add a few when making the oil.

Here’s a simple method for making rosehip oil at home:

1. Clean the dried rosehips thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris.

2. Once the rosehips are clean and dry, crush them gently to break them apart. For this step, you can use a mortar and pestle or a food processor.

3. Place the crushed rosehips (and seeds, if using) in a clean, dry glass jar.

4. Pour the carrier oil of your choice over the crushed rosehips, ensuring they are completely submerged in the oil.

5. Seal the jar tightly and place it in a warm and dark place to infuse. I like to put mine on top of a warm heater. Allow the rosehips to infuse in the oil for at least 4-6 weeks, shaking the jar gently every few days to help the infusion process.

6. After the infusion period, strain the oil through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the rosehip solids, and transfer the infused oil to a clean, dry glass bottle for storage.

Your homemade rosehip oil is now ready to use in your skincare routine. You can use it as a facial moisturizer, add a few drops to your favorite skincare products, or create homemade skincare products. Homemade rosehip oil can be a nourishing and beneficial addition to your natural skincare routine. This oil also makes a great gift.
